A leased line, as we discussed in our last post, is a direct, point-to-point connection. This is usually between you and your internet service provider (ISP), though you can also use these to connect to another office network / data centre.
Leased lines are somewhat of an alien concept to many individuals. However, they can have tremendous benefits for certain businesses. In this post we will run through a few of these benefits so you can see if a leased line may be right for your business. Strap in.
No peak time slow-downs
With most internet connections, you are sharing bandwidth with other users in your building or local area. This has several implications, most notably, during peak times or when the network is overloaded, your speeds will decrease, sometimes to a snail’s-pace.
This is not the case with a leased line. Any time, day or night, you know what you are getting. That reliability is one of the key selling points for leased lines, especially if your business cannot afford any connection slow downs.

To help illustrate the point… below is a pictorial representation of what you can expect with a leased line.
Hugely increased upload speeds
Another major advantage with leased lines is that they are “symmetrical”. What this means is that the upload and download speeds are the same.
With most connections, due to limited bandwidth, ISP’s will place a preference towards download speeds. This means whenever you want to upload a file to your company network, it can take an age.
Again, this is not a problem with leased lines. Many businesses rely on uploading large files throughout the day. Sometimes this simply wouldn’t be possible or practical with a traditional connection. That’s where leased lines come in.
Control
A leased line also affords a level of control and certainty over your network connection. You know that extrinsic factors such as the time of day or network load will not affect your performance. Therefore, if you are seeing any issues with your connection, you can rely upon…
Service level agreements
You have your own private connection dedicated to you. This comes with a white glove treatment in the form of strict service level agreements to guarantee performance and uptime. On top of this, you will have a dedicated point of contact and quick service should anything go awry.
Facilitates connections to multiple devices
Leased lines also allow you to connect everyone in your office or multiple devices to the same network without concerns of throttling performance. We’ll talk more about the types of businesses that can benefit from a leased line a little more in our next post. However, as an example, hotels can benefit tremendously from a leased line connection. This allows them to offer super-fast connectivity to all their guests and the ability to keep on top of bandwidth usage in real time.
Improved stability, reliability, and uptime
This is as a result of some of the above points. However, this is a private connection between you and your ISP (in most cases). This means you won’t have many of the issues that plague common connections, such as network throttling and outages. If you do have any issues, it can be much easier to diagnose, as you are the only one using the connection.
All this leads to a much more stable and reliable connection.
So there you have it! Some of the many advantages to a leased line connection. Come back next week when we’ll be discussing the different types of companies that can benefit most from these connections.
